Kortárs videóművészetről beszélve szinte mindenkinek eszébe jut a digitalizálás. Megjelenítő formaként pedig monitoron, kivetítőn, tévéképernyőn látható mozgóképekre gondolunk. Amit mi mozgóképnek látunk, az eleve trükk, hiszen látásmechanizmusunk hiányosságából fakad, hogy a másodpercenként (általában) 24 darab állóképet folytonos mozgásként érzékeljük. Valóban a látásunk lenne a hitelesség mércéje? A lassított felvételeken szemmel követhetünk olyan villámgyors mozgásokat, melyeket technikai segítség nélkül nem észlelhetnénk, más esetben thermokamerával „átláthatunk” betonfalakon, infrakamerával megfigyelhetünk sötétben zajló eseményeket. Olyan valós idejű jelenségeket szemlélhetünk, melyek ugyan megtörténnek, csak éppen az ember látási képességeinek korlátain túlmutatva. Speciális technikai apparátus nélkül számunkra mindezek láthatatlanok maradnának. Beszélhetünk-e egyáltalán eredetiségről a digitális technológia műfajában? Magyarán: mire jó a trükk? Hogyan értelmezhető az újmédia művészetben a képi csalás, a „fake” fogalma? E kérdések mentén bonyolódik a II. Intermodem programja.

When we speak of contemporary video art, by which nowadays we mean all electronic moving images, digitalisation springs to everyone’s mind. And we automatically associate the form of presentation of these images with moving images on monitors, displays or television screens. What we see as a moving image can, from a certain point of view, be called a delusion, since it is based on a deficiency in our visual perception: we perceive 24 or more still images projected per second as continuous motion. At the same time, we should also consider whether our vision is the valid source of authentic information, since in slow motion images we can follow movements that are so fast that we would never be able to perceive them without the help of technology. With thermo-cameras we can see through concrete walls, and with infra-cameras we can see things in darkness. These technologies enable us to observe real-time events that are beyond the limits of human visual perception, and would remain invisible for us but for the special technology. Of course, all this is valuable only if special effects are not an end in themselves but are used to strengthen basic artistic idea. In an art video the purpose of manipulation is to demonstrate substance of reality, to concentrate the experience and visual elements. The video camera and postproduction editing have the same function as the painter‘s brush or the sculptor’s chisel. They re-draw reality, from the figure that looks realistic to the abstract phenomena that express a certain mood. Each artistic medium has its own characteristic features and power of expression. Video is characterised by dynamics and a permanent re-interpretation of media images. Can we speak of reality with respect to the medium of digital technology? Can we expect a digital video to present an original image? Where are the limits of the effects in moving images and what effects can and will an artist use? To what extent do manipulations help and how do they limit the work of an artist? In which phase of making the work should an artist plan to use effects and manipulation, and can the way of using them be planned at all? In other words, what is an effect good for? How can the notion of delusion, the fake, be interpreted in new media art?
