Search tips

Opening page of the portal

The most important element of the opening page is the search field. There are 41 metadata fields for describing the digitalized documents uploaded in the database and a small-size preview of the content gives you an insight into a part of the document. Metadata fields may differ by document types (for example an image record does not have a content field and only audio-visual files have crew and cast fields, while there are composer and performer fields in the case of sound records.) The detailed introduction of the search function can be found in the paragraph ‘Use of the search interface’.

Besides searching and browsing digitized cultural contents, visitors can view thematic virtual exhibitions from the records of MaNDA’s database, which are widened weekly. Virtual exhibitions are accessible directly on the opening page, from the articles of the slideshow. The aim of the exhibitions is to introduce cultural contents of the database by putting them in a new context and form. Thus, contents which are separated by spatial, legal or formal attributes and would never get in one exhibition room, may have the chance to be displayed side by side.

On the lower side of the page, you can find information about the European Digital Library, the news portal forumhungaricum.hu, our partner institutes and about the site itself and its operators among others.

Registration is not possible on the portal. The 'Enter' function is accessible exclusively for the partner institutes. The database is public, but certain documents of it are not public due to copyrights and rights relating to personality. If you do not have the right to see a certain document, please turn to the uploading institute.

Use of the search interface

The simple search function of the database surface can be used by writing key words in the search field on the opening page. Under the search field, you can see how many records and metadata the database contains presently.

If you want to modulate your search, you can use the complex search function. Give the content group in which you want to search, for example: names, ages or places. The following search categories might help by opening the menu of ‘search in’ on the left-hand side of the search field:

  • All fields: searches in all the data fields listed below:
    • Title
    • Creator
    • Alternative title
    • Subject
    • Description
    • Table of contents
    • Contributor
    • Temporal reference
    • Publisher
    • Crew
    • Cast
    • Composer
    • Performer

  • Data identifiers (after registration): it searches in the registration numbers, ISSN and ISBN numbers in the field ‘Data identifiers’

After searching, you will get a set of findings – ten records per page. Findings can be filtered by the search field ‘filter’ in the left-hand side band. You can open the menu ‘filter in’ with all the above mentioned categories (all fields, titles, subjects, names, periods, places) as well.

If you start searching with an empty search field, the system will list all the records of the database, starting with the most recently modified ones.

You can narrow findings further in the left-hand side band by ticking the squares of the data fields of type, year, organization, language, licence, audience and medium. In these categories, records are listed according to the number of the original findings in descending order. Except for the ‘year’, because findings are listed in descending order but according to the year.

Category ‘type’ displays the contents of the database in five document types. They are:

  • Text: text documents, books, periodicals, news article off-cuts, etc.;
  • Image: images, photos, negatives, picture postcards, etc.;
  • Audiovisual: audiovisual documents;
  • Sound: audio works, recordings, interviews, recorded music, etc.;
  • 3D: rotatable and measurable 3D models

The aspects selected during the search can be seen under the field ‘filter’ on the left side. By clicking on the ‘x’ next to the narrowing or searching conditions, you can cancel the step and go back to the higher set of findings.
