William B. Gruber feltaláló előszőr az 1939-es New York-ban tartott Világkiállításon mutatta be 3 dimenziós sztereoszkópját. A hozzávaló koronghoz először 16 mm-es Kodachrome mozifilmet használtak, melynek forgatását az eszközön elhelyezett egyszerű gomb teszi lehetővé. A II. világháború idején hadászati oktatási célokra használták, majd utána tett szert igazán nagy népszerűségre, mikor elkezdtek - a korábbi témák mellett - gyermekek számára nagy mennyiségben meseillusztrációkat, képregényeket bemutató korongokat gyártani. 1939-1966 között az amerikai Sawyer's cég gyártotta a View-Master dianézőket, majd 1966-tól a GAF (General Aniline & Film) cég.

Inventor William B. Gruber introduced his 3D stereoscope at the New York World's Fair in 1939. The early reels were made out of 16 mm Kodachrome films, which can be rolled with a simple button, located on the side of the viewer. During World War II it was used for military education. It became popular when the production of reels for children about tales and comics started (other themes also remained in production). Between 1939 and 1966, View-Master slide viewers were made by the American Sawyer's Company, after 1966 by GAF (General Aniline & Film) Corporation.
