Ez a kelta szó sót jelent, hiszen a környéken található sóbányákért a bajor hercegek és a salzburgi érsekek megtámadták egymást. 1158-ban Oroszlán Henrik városi rangra emelte. 1504 óta tartozik Bajorországhoz.

Together with other Alpine towns, Bad Reichenhall engages in the Alpine Town of the Year Association for the implementation of the Alpine Convention to achieve sustainable development in the alpine arc. Bad Reichenhall was awarded Alpine Town of the Year 2001.
