Az első világháború után, a hadifogságból hazatért Ferenc megözvegyülve kénytelen új életet kezdeni. Volt földije és hadifogolytársa, Rókus meghalt. Ferenc szörnyű titkot rejt szívében: Rókus halálát ő okozta, mert nem osztotta meg vele az utolsó falat kenyeret. Ferenc sorsa, hogy felnevelje a két gyermeket, Rókusék árváját és saját félárvájukat

Etel goes insane and later becoming the victim of a sect of religious fanatics, she commits suicide. A news reaches Ferenc that Rókus is alive in Russia. However, he has no intention of returning home. Ferenc has to face his own destiny, which is having to bring up their child and Rókus's orphan alone.
