A II. világháborús pusztítás és rombolás után Budapesten a Duna felett csak ideiglenes hidak biztosították a közlekedést. Az egyik legfontosabb átkelő a Petőfi pontonhíd lett, amely arról kapta a nevét, hogy a pesti Petőfi teret kötötte össze a budai Döbrentei térrel, a vízbe zuhant Erzsébet híd tőszomszédságában. A pestiek azonban a leleményesebb Böske híd elnevezést kezdték használni, a Petőfi nevet pedig a döntéshozók később egy másik hídra örökítették át. pestbuda.hu

Photos were donated by Sándor Iharos. After the devastation and destruction of World War II, only temporary bridges provided transport over the Danube in Budapest. One of the most important crossings was the Petőfi pontoon bridge, named after that it linked Petőfi Square in Pest and the Döbrentei Square in Buda, next to the Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Bridge, which had fallen into the water. The people of Pest, however, started to use the more inventive name Böske (Bessie) Bridge, and the name Petőfi was later given to another bridge by the decision-makers.
