Már a rómaiak is bányásztak mészkövet Fertőrákoson,de Sopron elődjének falai is e kőből épültek. A legtöbb mészkövet a XIX. században termelték ki, a bánya ekkor a Bécsi Építőtársaság tulajdonában volt, számos soproni és bécsi épület köveit adta a kőfejtő.

Even the Romans quarried limestone in Fertőrákos, but the walls of the predecessor town of Sopron were also built from this stone. Most of the limestone was quarried in the 19th century, when the quarry was owned by the Vienna Building Society, and the quarry provided the stones for many buildings in Sopron and Vienna.
