A képen az újpesti Állami Áruház látható éjszakai fényárban, sarkán a közlekedési forgalom ellenőrzésére szolgáló rendőrfülkével. A IV. kerületi István útnak, az Árpád út és József Attila utca közötti részén, a régi földszintes kis üzletsor helyén 1952-ben épült fel a köztudatban Állami Áruház néven megmaradt újpesti üzletház. A szocreál terveket Rákos Pál készítette. A főbejárat eredetileg az István úton volt, de volt egy másik bejárat az Árpád útról is. Az áruszállítás a József Attila utcai áruforgalmi kapun történt. A földszinti árkádsor kiszélesítette a járdát, lehetőséget teremtett a zavartalan kirakatnézésre. Az Árpád úti homlokzat a jól megtervezett Állami Áruház (majd Újpesti Áruház) feliratnak van alárendelve (mely elsősorban éjszaka érvényesült igazán). A főhomlokzat első emeleti ablakai szélesek, a második emeletiek keskenyebbek, könnyedebbé téve a homlokzatot, míg átriumos kialakítású belső tere a térérzetet növelte meg. Az 1949-ben létrehozott Állami Áruházak Nemzeti Vállalatnak tizenkét egységét saját nevükön ismerte a vásárlóközönség (Lottó, Otthon, Verseny, Csillag stb.), az "Állami" mégis az újpestihez köthető. Az áruházat Gertler Viktor rendezte Állami áruház című filmje, illetve a benne szereplő, a minden hájjal megkent eladó figuráját mesterien játszó Latabár Kálmán tette az utókor számára felejthetetlenné. Ugyanakkor a filmbéli Diadal Áruházban játszódó jeleneteket a közhiedelemmel ellentétben nagy részben az Úttörő Áruházban forgatták. A filmben a nyolcadik percében tűnik fel először az Újpest áruház.

The picture shows the night lights of the State Department Store of Újpest with a police booth on the corner to control traffic. The Department Store of Újpest that remained in common knowledge as State Department Store was built in 1952, on the place of an old row of stores in the part of István Road between Árpád Road and József Attila Street in the 4th district. The social realist plans were made by Pál Rákos. The main entrance was originally on István Road, but there was another entrance from Árpád Road. The goods were transported through the freight gate in József Attila Street. The row of arcades on the ground floor widened the pavement, creating an opportunity for undisturbed shop window viewing. The façade on Árpád Road is subordinated to the well-designed State Department Store (then Újpest Department Store), which really showed up at night. The windows on the first floor of the main façade are wide, the windows on the second floor are narrower, making the façade lighter, while the atrium-designed interior increased the feeling of space. The twelve units of the National Company of State Department Stores, established in 1949, were known to the public by their own names (Lottery, Home, Competition, Star, etc.), yet the "State" can be linked to the store of Újpest. Kálmán Latabár, who masterfully plays the figure of the artful dodger seller, made the film "State Department Store" (Állami Áruház) unforgettable for posterity, directed by Viktor Gertler. At the same time, the scenes in the Diadal (Triumph) Department Store were mainly filmed in the Úttörő (Pioneer) Store, contrary to popular belief. The Újpest Store appears for the first time in the eighth minute of the film.
