"Határnyitás" című kiállítás a Bécsben lévő Balassi Institut Collegium Hungaricum Galerie UngArt kiállítótermében, a bécsi "Disign Woche" keretén belül rendezett kiállítás a Páneurópai Piknik 25. évfordulója alkalmából. A Magyar Kereskedelmi és Vendéglátóipari Múzeum 37 darab tárgyat illetve dokumentumot kölcsönzött a kiállítás részére. A kiállítás meghívója, prospektusa az MKVM Kereskedelmi Adattárában van. A kiállítás anyaga az 1980-as évek mindennapjaiba enged betekintést a határ osztrák és magyar oldalán. A tablókon jól nyomon követhető a magyarok Ausztriába irányuló bevásárlóturizmusa, melyet a Grósz-kormány utazási korlátok eltörlésével, a világútlevél és új vámszabályok bevezetésével tett lehetővé. A vásárlások célja általában tartós fogyasztási eszközök, (hűtőláda, mikrohullámú sütő) illetve szórakoztatóelektronika (színes TV, videomagnó, sztereómagnó, walkman) beszerzése volt. A nyelvvédők ekkor még próbáltak lépést tartani, ekkor születtek meg a képmagnó, sétálómagnó kifejezések is). Ez időben magyar autók végeláthatatlan sora haladt Bécs bevásárlóközpontjai felé (Mariahilfer Straße, Shopping-City Süd), hacsak el nem csábultak az odafelé vezető út mentén kialakított garázsdiszkontok némelyikének akciós ajánlatától. Miután elköltötték az évek alatt összekuporgattatott, és feketén váltott valutájukat, haza felé vették az irányt gondosan megőrizve az eladótól kapott "Mehrwertsteuer" igazolást, ami mentesítette őket a vámfizetés alól.

The exhibition "Opening the Border" was an exhibition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic in the exhibition hall of the Balassi Institut Collegium Hungaricum Galerie UngArt in Vienna as part of the "Disign Woche" in Vienna. The material of the exhibition gives an insight into the everyday life of the 1980s on the Austrian and Hungarian sides of the border. The display shows the shopping tourism of Hungarians to Austria, which was made possible by the Grósz government's abolition of travel restrictions, the introduction of world passports and new customs regulations. The purpose was usually to purchase durable consumer goods (refrigerator, microwave oven) and consumer electronics (color TV, VCR, stereo, walkman). At that time, the linguists were still trying to keep up, and new Hungarian words were created). At that time, an endless line of Hungarian cars was driving towards Vienna's shopping malls (Mariahilfer Straße, Shopping-City Süd), unless they were tempted by the special offers of some of the garage discounts along the way there. After spending their currency, which had been saved up over the years and exchanged in black, they headed home carefully, retaining the "Mehrwertsteuer" certificate they received from the seller, which exempted them from paying customs duties.
