Rubempré is the protagonist of the novels Illusions Lost and The Splendours and Miseries of Courtesans. During the Napoleonic era, the best restaurants in Paris were to be found in the Palais-Royal area. One of these was the Véry, where Balzac often indulged in culinary delights. The most famous gourmet of the age, the gastronomic writer Grimod de la Reynière, who considered the Véry to be the best restaurant in France, frequented the restaurant.
